Search Engine Optimization and Marketing Projections

The following statistics illustrate the growing necessity for all businesses to implement effective SEO/SEM campaigns for their continued growth.

  • It is estimated that 88% of Americans 12-29 go online.
  • It is estimated that 32% of Americans over 65 go online.

According to a Pew Internet Activities December 2006 survey, 70% (or, 141 million) of American adults use the internet.

  • Of those, 91% use a search engine to find information.
  • Globally, 256 million people visited a search engine in December 2006 – 81% of the global Internet population.
  • The search audience has grown by 10% over the last year, while the total Internet audience grew 8%.
  • The average searcher views 93 search pages a month across 27 minutes, which represents 3.4% of total time spent on the Internet.
  • Google purports 91 million searches per day.
  • Based on click through activity from August 1, 2006, to January 20, 2007, Google had a 71.6% share of the global search engine market.
  • Yahoo had an 11.1% share of the global search engine market in second place.

An Interactive Advertising Bureau study – IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report (May 2007) – identified Internet ad spending was worth a total of $16.9 billion, with search accounting for 40% or around $6.8 billion, for the full-year 2006.

“Search” includes “paid listings,” “contextual search,” “paid inclusion” and “site optimization.”

  • Search revenue accounted for 40% of 2006 full year revenues.
  • Display advertising was 32%.
  • Classifieds was 18%.
  • Referrals was 8%.

62% of advertisers plan to increase search marketing spend over the next 12 months according to a special report from the Search Engine Strategies conference, February 13-15, 2007, “The Search Landscape.”

The report further stated:

  • Advertisers plan on utilizing mobile search, video search and pay per call more in 2007.
  •  Advertisers’ top search marketing objectives are generating immediate online sales and building brand awareness.
  •  Increasing competition for top rankings has been advertisers’ and agencies’ greatest problem with their search marketing efforts.

Effective SEO requires more than keyword research, selection and reporting. It requires effective website development; it requires effective website design;constant site analysis and benchmarking, based on key performance metrics, and a focus on achieving clear business goals.
